The fifth film in the Conjuring universe weighs about seven pounds soaking wet. Yes this is what I call horror-lite. Very vanilla. Not really much happens here amid the window dressing and high Hollywood spit and shine. This is a horror movie for non-horror fans or at least the ones whose only horror films contain big budgets and big stars. Is it bad? Not really, it's just there.

To me a golden opportunity was wasted here as the character has some pretty decent back story as hinted at in earlier films. Not all big budget horror films are fluff and the Conjuring was quite good because it balanced the polish with enough unsettling situations and great acting. Each film has lost a touch of luster from the original and with the Nun, seems to be going though the proverbial motions.
The performances in the film are pretty decent if not truly strong and there is some atmosphere of dread but the Nun herself has become almost iconic within the series and just isn't that scary and she always seems to be floating behind someone, what's up with that? Threadbare plot and a massive over-reliance on jump scares (many very ill-timed) knock this one down enough notches that it was just okay for me.

All in all it's about what I expected it COULD end up being though I thought it would be a lot better. I watched it, didn't hate it, and will probably never watch again or even think about it much. Fair weather fans and Conjuring fanatics will probably eat it up but a film with this kind of status and budget has no excuse for not being well executed.
2.5/5
Great review I had a feeling it would be peppered with jump scares!
