The Hunt, The Platform, It: Chapter 2, VFW and more mini-review madness!

Enjoy the reviews, as always feedback helps and is appreciated!

IT: Chapter 2 (2019)

3.5/5

Defeated by members of the Losers' Club, the evil clown Pennywise returns 27 years later to terrorize the town of Derry, Maine, once again. Now, adults, childhood friends have long since gone their separate ways. But when people start disappearing, Mike Hanlon calls the others home for one final stand. Damaged by scars from the past, the united Losers must conquer their deepest fears to destroy the shape-shifting Pennywise -- now more powerful than ever.

Not bad at all if a notch below Part one. The Cast does a fine job here as the adult versions of the Loser's Club and Pennywise sneers and squeals through the proceedings. Not every moment works and some are dragged out but this is an ultimately satisfying conclusion and among the better King adaptations.

VFW (2020)

4/5

A typical night for veterans at a VFW turns into an all-out battle for survival when a desperate teen runs into the bar with a bag of stolen drugs. When a gang of violent punks come looking for her, the vets use every weapon at their disposal to protect the girl and themselves from an unrelenting attack.

Heavy on action, light on horror, an all-around ass-kicking good time! The casting is superb with William Sadler, Fred Williamson, and Martin Kove but Stephen Lang absolutely shines as the ringleader of old war vets that take no shit. This one is pure camp and over the top fun and purposely made to look like an old grindhouse film. Pop a lot of corn for this one!

THE HUNT (2020)

4/5

Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don't know where they are -- or how they got there. In the shadow of a dark internet conspiracy theory, ruthless elitists gather at a remote location to hunt humans for sport. But their master plan is about to be derailed when one of the hunted, Crystal, turns the tables on her pursuers.

Apparently this one ruffled some feathers, guess what? Good!!! It's political satire folks and the glue that holds this together. The scenario is familiar and well played but the political overtones give this one an extra dimension. The pacing is very good and the finale is a grand slam. If your not guzzling gin and politics, check this one out!

After Midnight (2020)

2.5/5

When Hank's girlfriend decides to pack up and leave him, he starts to lose his mind.

(Yawn) Honestly, this one didn't do a damn thing for me. Slow and boring story of a man who's girlfriend leaves and he can't cope. A lot of drawn-out scenes oh and a monster is supposedly loose. The mild intrigue is soon buried under a poorly produced, zero budget mess. Skip it.

EVER AFTER (2020)

3/5

Two years after a zombie outbreak leaves the country in ruins, two women flee their struggling community to find a safe haven.

Strange and middling German zombie flick that never seems to get off the ground. Methodically plodding yet artistically shot this one balances the fence of watch/don't watch. While it's worth a once-through, there is nothing truly memorable here. A swing and...a bunt. Good luck.

The Platform (2020)

4.5/5

In the future, prisoners housed in vertical cells watch as inmates in the upper cells are fed while those below starve.

A truly mesmerizing film in the vein of a Snowpiercer. Like that film, there are many pretexts to the treatment of the lower class in the upper echelons of politics. What is most marveling here is the creative story revolving a platform of food that descends and the inmates who never know which level they will end up on next. Great performances, nice camera work and a story that will stick with you after the credits roll. My highest rated film so far this year.

Creep (2014)

2.5/5

Aaron answers an online ad and drives to a stranger's house to film him for the day. The man wants to make a movie for his unborn child, but his requests become more bizarre as the day goes along.

About as dumb as the mask in the photo. I finally watched because apparently some of you love this one. I don't get it. I mean storywise it could have worked but here are two really bland characters that make it hard to care about and the film just crawls by. Technically a low fi FF and in that respect much of it works but seriously I figured out the end early on. Where else could it go? And the big "twist" showcasing the brevity of the psycho's insanity is pulled straight from other films (Belko, Poughkeepsie). I watched 'til the end and the park bench scene was cool if completely unrealistic. Not impressed.

See ya next time!!!
