A Quiet Place is a horror/sci-fi hybrid that is heavy on both flaws and fun. Rather than eviscerate the film for it's failings as many site's have done I will touch upon a few but also explain how they do NOT derail this train, just maybe slow it down a bit.

When watching a film like this, in which an unnamed event has left a family of survivors fearful of making even the tiniest noise to avoid death by monster, it's important to remember to take much of the implausible with a grain of salt. If I would have focused only on the mishaps and guffaws, I could have hated this film. Instead I took each disparaging moment and looked for a magnificent one to negate it.

Director John Krasinski (The Hollars) carves a nice niche here with a tale so out there and gripping that you will be glued to the screen for most of the 90 minute running time if just to find out what happens. Not many questions are answered but the ending is on point and the cinematography is crisp and clean. While i found no standout performances by the cast, all were capable enough to move the story.

Don't get me wrong, the film is FULL of inconsistencies some worse than others. The parenting skills of mom and dad leave little to be desired resulting in many head smacking moments where you may scream at the screen. Likewise the creatures ability to hear at a supersonic level at times and the fact that they have trouble discerning sounds from each other will frustrate the most stolid viewer. Another biggie...the damn nail! You'll see what I mean. Also less full visual of the monster would have been nice.

Disheartening as it was, I stayed strong and used the formula for sci-fi that states the genre alone allows a certain amount of implausibility. I just didn't let it ruin it for me and came away pretty damn well entertained. On the other hand the cinematic flotsam and jetsam cannot simply be ignored either. What bothered me most I think is the notion that the editors and producers must have poured over the finished copy of this film repeatedly and didn't call out the anomalies. That's just being lazy.

If I just play with this for a few seconds I should be okay, right?

All in all for the most part I enjoyed the story and was entertained despite my mind lingering here and there on some of the flubs. They didn't ruin the proceedings but did knock them down a notch or two. Best idea is to give this one a shot for yourself and see what all the fuss is about. ~
