SCARY STORIES, MA, BRIGHTBURN, CORPORATE ANIMALS and more! Mini review extravaganza!!!!

I've been really busy so no time to write full reviews but that's okay because now you get 9 mini reviews for the price of one. Who loves ya?!!!

MA (2019)

3.5/5

I was unconvinced when I first heard of this one. However, despite some really bad character decision and minor tropes, Ma works for one very good reason...Octavia Spencer! She nailed it out of the park and overshadowed the films shortcomings with a realistic portrayal of a woman on the edge.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019)

4/5

Brilliant anthology told in a unique way. The individual stories (lifted from the book) are actually integrated into an original overall story done with aplomb by Grade A director Andre Ovredal. Performances and production are top notch here...check it out!

POLAROID (2019)

3.5/5

Every now and then a movie comes out that is unoriginal, full of tropes, independently produced...and still enjoyable. Joining the ranks of LIGHTS OUT, UNDER THE BED, BOGEYMAN and more is Polaroid, a very well done if not the most original ever. The story of a camera taking pictures that will curse death on it's subjects could have been lifted from a goosebumps tale, the tropes present will have you groaning but wait...what's this? A well shot (in a washed out blue) production, capable cast, jump scares that actually do NOT annoy and veteran horror legend Mitch Pileggi (Horace Pinker in Wes Craven's Shocker) and you have some good stuff. Add a cool twisted twist and decent CGI and you have a winner!

BRIGHTBURN (2019)

4/5

A superhero horror film? Yep and a damn good one at that! Despite seeming to come up somewhat short, Brightburn delivers a unique, original story that entertains immensely. Is he just a creepy kid with super powers or something far more sinister? Watch this gem to find out!

ANNA AND THE APOCALYPSE (2018)

3/5

Described as Shaun of the Dead meets La La Land and a combination of Holiday/Horror/Musical could this film ever live up to all that? Well no...no it does not. Despite being fun and entertaining this film is a case of too much going on at once and the comedy often fails to deliver. Flawed as it is, it's still a decent watch and fills the holiday horror void...somewhat.

Corporate Animals (2019)

3/5

Corporate Animals is hardly that much horror but some snappy dialogue, kooky characters and Miss Demi Moore as you've rarely seen her make for a fun romp anyway. Lowball this one on your way in and sit back and enjoy. It won't win any awards but still mindless camp ensues!

NIGHTMARE CINEMA (2019)

3.5/5

Your usual mixed bag anthology is given decent life with a good mix of stories that don't all work but are a great representation of many facets of horror. The best story here is the first, THE THING IN THE WOODS which starts as a campy slasher and evolves in a way you can't predict. One of the better horror anthologies to come out in recent years. The weakest link here is Mickey Roarke as the Projectionist in the wraparound story that adds nothing to the proceedings and actually hinders the film. Look past that mess and enjoy the rest!

KILLERS ANONYMOUS (2019)

3/5

Light horror with comedic overtones, this works only as mild entertainment with a couple of bright spots. Gary Oldman as always makes a bland film, entertaining. Not great but not the worst.

Candy Corn (2019)

2/5

Pretty much crap all the way around falling somewhat between Uncork'd and mediocre. Decent production and a moment or two are the only saving graces here. Skip it!

Hope you liked this bevy of reviews, let me know what your thoughts are on the above mentioned films.
